PEPE RIBAS, ‘AJOBLANCO’ AND THE CONTRACULTURE DURING THE TRANSITION

José Ribas, known as Pepe Ribas, is one of the founders of the countercultural magazine ‘Ajoblanco’. This magazine threatened to rupture with the existing taboos during the Transition. Its pages spoke of controversial subjects for the time, such as ecology, the LGBTI movement, collectivism, antipsychiatry and others.

Ribas was part of a group that, without hierarchies and from different ideological positions, developed a medium that aimed to promote a libertarian culture and offer a medium that had given voice to the generation that lived through the Spanish Transition. In that medium, up to 2000 texts made by the readers of the magazine in its first stage (1974-1980) were published.
